“In others we see fragments of ourselves”
This post may be a bit random…I can’t think of anything to write so I took a quote I made sometime ago and I will write about what I thought when I made that quote.
Peak hour on public transport:
Getting on a crowded train, you see all these people frantically attempting to find a seat often moving through many carriages to search for one. Then you see the odd person taking up two seats for no apparent reason. One seat-searcher politely asks the person using two seats to make room for them. They squish together, the seat-search now content that he/she is sitting now.
I think to myself:
“Have humans devolved so much that they can’t stand for half an hour anymore? Most people come from the office or school where they have been sitting for 8 hours except for maybe getting up to make that coffee or moving classrooms. So now they sit on the train, for 20-40min, then get off at their station. From their station they either drive, get a bus or walk home. I suspect most don’t walk and even if they do, they won’t be walking far. Why? Because if they need a seat for 20min, they won’t be able to walk for that long. So they eventually find their way home and then they sit on the couch and watch TV. I mean you won’t be standing much at home would you?
Then I wonder if I’ll be the same in a few years time? I’ve been told that when you get old you can really feel it in your body when you stand. I prefer to believe otherwise but time will tell.”
A few stations later:
An elderly person walks in. Squeezing past the crowd near the door, they reach seating areas. Then a nice person kindly offers their seat to the elderly person.
I think again:
“That’s something I’d do. What a nice person, I admire their consideration. This world isn’t doomed after all…..=P”
I know what it feels like to wake up on a bad morning and having to stand 1.5hours while traveling by bus, train, bus isn’t something what you’d look forward to. But other times when you feel better, maybe if you’ve been sitting the whole day, try to just stand and let others have the seats if the train is crowded. Otherwise the next time you see someone frantically searching for those seats, you could be looking at a vision of yourself.
Stars
‘Darkness hid the sun from sight,
Engulfing the world in night.
“Illuminate humanity”, bade Light,
And the skies blazed alight.’
This post took some time, life seems to be always busy…
But sometimes life gets so busy you don’t notice the little things that make life so interesting. Next time you go outside at night, take a little time to look above (weather permitting oif course…=P). Remember back when you were a little kid and asked your parents, “What are those lights in the sky?”. What did you think of those stars back then? Those shining torches floating far away in the sky, appearing so close that you can almost grab them and yet at the same time so far away that you don’t know exactly how far they are. Every night they would appear and slowly but surely crawl across the heavens.
Stars could be just a symbol for us, beckoning us with their twinkling while at the same time reminding us that we have a long way to go before we will be anywhere near them. This may be just like goals in our lives, the result beckons but to get there we need to ‘walk’ far. So when you get tired, look above and let those stars restore a little of your faith.
Just a little note before I finish. If anyone’s interested in a bit of star gazing without the smog from the city. There is this nice country town called Coonabarabran, it has the best sky view in the state. So whenever you feel like getting mesmerised by those lights in the sky, might want to pay that town a visit.
